Are you interested in conservation? We organise a range of free community events for people of all ages, to showcase the wildlife at our beautiful nature reserves and the work we’re doing to protect it.

Wetland habitat creation

Saturday 7 March 2020, 1pm – 3pm

Learn about the creation of wetland habitats on the nature reserve for wildlife and flood alleviation. Wet grassland, reed beds and scrapes have been created, along with the construction of control structures and a culvert to direct water to where it is needed to maintain habitats.

Introduction to birdwatching

Sunday 8 March 2020, 10am – 12pm

An event to discover the birds using the reserve at this time of year. Learn how the reserve is managed for the benefit of wetland birds.

Heritage conservation

Saturday 14 March 2020, 10am – 12pm

An opportunity for the local community to help with the conservation of the reserve. Learn about the reserve, how it is managed and explore ways in which you can help volunteer. Step into the world of birdwatching by spending time in the new bird hide.

Sustainable farming for wildlife and food production

Sunday 15 March 2020, 1pm – 3pm

A look at the farming practices on the reserve, working towards balancing food production with wildlife conservation.

Wildlife exploration for children

An activity for children and young people to discover the water flashes and the wildlife on the reserve. Wildlife identification, the use of wildlife identification charts, how to use binoculars, telescopes and birdwatching will form part of this activity walk.

Introducing Great Water Parsnip to Broomhill Flash Nature Reserve

A conversation activity to introduce Great Water Parsnip to the reserve. A hands-on practical activity to introduce the roots of this plant onto the reserve. Learn about the conversation status of this plant and its lifecycle.

Celebration Event

POSTPONED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE

An open event for the local community to celebrate and view the exhibition of the creative works of young people who entered the Garganey Trust’s creative writing and photography competition. Ian McMillian a local poet and broadcaster will help us judge the winners, with prizes being presented by the Lord Mayor of Barnsley. This event will also provide an opportunity for the local community to meet people from the Garganey Trust and find out what work we do in the local area.

11am – 2pm – Refreshments and a chance to view the exhibition, drop in at any time.

12pm – 2pm – Optional guided walk. Expert led guided walk from Darfield to Broomhill Flash Nature Reserve and back. 

2.30pm – Announcement of the winners of the competition and presentation of prizes.

3pm – 4pm – Buffet and refreshments.

Bird box building

Learn how to build a bird box; all materials and tools are provided. The placement and type of nest boxdepends on the species the box is intended for. Learn more about types of bird boxes and where to put your bird nesting box to attract different species. Have fun, learn new skills and help conserve the birds of your local area.
